HA)--A Heat Advisory will be in effect for the entire KGWA Listening area each afternoon and evening for the remainder of the week and into the weekend. Daytime highs will be near 100, with the heat index at 105 or higher. The conditions can result in heat illnesses for those working or spending time outdoors, so take precautions. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned environment when possible, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

CC)---The Enid Mayor and Board of Commissioners will meet this evening. On the agenda for the regular meeting, commissioners will consider going into executive session to confer on matters pertaining to economic development, including the creation of proposals to entice a department store and a movie theater to locate in Enid, and to develop a proposal for a new industrial site in Enid and reconvene into Regular Session to take any necessary action. In other business, commissioners will approve a number of consent and regular business items. During their study session, commissioners will hear a legislative update from Curt Roggow; a presentation on economic development marketing, industry recruitment and the new industrial park; and an update on Enid’s Sister City, Kollo, Niger. The west African nation’s government recently was deposed in a military coup. The study session will be held at 5:00, followed by the regular meeting at 6:30. Both will be held in Council Chambers of the city administration building, 401 W. Garriott. Both meetings will be open to the public.

FL)--U.S. Congressman Frank Lucas visited the KGWA studios on Monday. Lucas represents the 3rd Congressional District of Oklahoma including Enid and western Oklahoma. He talked with Alan Clepper about work on the new Farm Bill and we will share that conversation with you coming up Friday morning as part of What’s Up Enid. Congress is in its August recess, with a return date of Sept. 12. There will be only about 12 legislative days in September for Congress before Oct. 1, when the new fiscal year begins. Lucas said if all appropriations have not been passed by Oct. 1, a continuing resolution will be enacted. Lucas said there are several pieces of legislation that need to be addressed, including reauthorizing the Federal Aviation Administration, as well as the National Defense Authorization Act, which he said needs to be addressed before Oct. 1. He said he also expects the new farm bill, which he is helping write, also will be extended. While in town Monday Lucas was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Enid.

DD)--Main Street Enid invites you to celebrate the dog days of summer with Downtown Dogfest during August First Friday. Festivities include a Puppy Poker Run that will include several dog friendly downtown businesses. In addition to our Dogfest activities we have “Bikes & Barks” a special BMX Show by Tulsa's Quickie-Mart in Collaboration with The Bike Shop and Retro BMX Builds. There will be special dog friendly vendors on the courthouse lawn, a live DJ by BlaiserPro, and a “Dog Cat Walk” Fashion Show with awards for Best Dressed Dog and Look Alike Contest. TH)--The annual Oklahoma sales tax holiday falls on the first weekend in August this year, just in time for back-to-school shopping. Tax-free weekend begins at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 4 and ends at midnight on Aug. 6, 2023. During that time frame, certain clothing and shoe purchases and other qualified items are exempt from state, city, county and local sales taxes. Oklahoma retailers may not collect state or local sales or use tax on most shoes or clothing sold for less than $100, according to Oklahoma Tax Commission. Retailers are required to participate and may not charge sales tax on approved items that weekend. Also, qualifying items bought online are exempt from sales tax, as long as they are ordered and paid for during the exemption period.
