On Monday, May 8th Medford Volunteer Firefighters Tony Garcia and Michael Smith were awarded the Oklahoma State Fire Associations’ Medal of Valor at the Medford City Council meeting. Garcia and Smith were honored for performing their duties in a courageous and selfless manner in July of 2022 whenever an explosion occurred at the ONEOK Medford Natural Gas Liquids Fractionation Facility. With flames visible from over a mile away and secondary explosions possible, these men advanced into the inner zone to rescue six individuals who were still in the facility following the explosion. Upon arriving at the entrance to the facility, firefighters found locked gates and had to use irons to force them open. The firefighters then extracted the individuals and moved them to medical care with no additional injuries or loss of life. The OSFA Medal of Valor has been in existence since September of 1995 and can be awarded to any firefighter who performs acts of courage, bravery and/or valor, who goes above and beyond the call of duty, who performs an extraordinary act of bravery or who shows exemplary action while on or off duty.
