NR)--Today’s widespread rains across most of the state are much needed, including in Blaine County where water was diverted last week from Canton Lake to Lake Hefner, a reservoir that provides drinking water to residents of Oklahoma City. The release of water on October 17 from Canton was the second this year, with the first release taking place Aug. 11. In both instances, 13,000 acre feet were released. The two releases of water are the first since 2013, when nearly 30,000 cubic acre feet were removed in the midst of difficult drought conditions. The release of water last week raised Hefner about 2 feet and lowered Canton Lake about the same. The water is released by the Army Corps of Engineers which manages Canton Lake, and is released down the North Canadian River and takes a few days to get to Lake Hefner, which is low due to ongoing warm temperatures and drought-like conditions.
