BM)--A woman whose newborn baby was found dead in a dumpster in April 2017 was sentenced Wednesday afternoon. Enid News and Eagle reports 32 year-old Kathryn Juanita Green received one-year sentences on each count of unauthorized disposal of a corpse, possession of a CDS and obstructing an officer, and seven years with Oklahoma Department of Corrections on one count of desecration of a human corpse count. All of these counts’ sentences will run concurrently, and Green will receive credit for time served, which is 240 days. The balance will be suspended upon completion of a drug offender work camp or similar program of kind and duration. According to an affidavit filed in the case, Enid Police Department responded on April 9, 2017, to 1616 S. 2nd. Officers were told a deceased infant was inside a luggage trunk in a large trash container outside the address. Officers located an infant boy’s body wrapped in a blanket inside a plastic trash bag. An Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office report had listed the manner of death for the boy as homicide and the cause as methamphetamine toxicity.

SI)--The investigative report of a deputy-involved shooting that occurred in Covington last month has been provided to the Garfield County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether to file charges. The investigation was conducted by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. On Sept. 15, Covington Police Department was contacted regarding a mental health situation involving Weston Cassody at a residence in Covington. CPD contacted Garfield County Sheriff’s Office to respond to the call and a deputy, whose name has not been released, responded and entered the residence. Once the deputy was inside, Cassody reportedly got a knife and began threatening the deputy, who commanded Cassody to put the weapon down. According to OSBI, Cassody did not comply and the deputy fired his weapon at Cassody, hitting him. The deputy, who remains on administrative paid leave, began rendering aid, according to the release. Emergency medical services arrived on scene, and Cassody was pronounced dead. DA Mike Fields said his office received the agency’s full report, which includes witness interviews, OSBI’s investigative activity, photographs and the crime scene report, on Oct. 6. Fields told Enid News and Eagle, since receiving the OSBI report his office been reviewing the evidence and the law before determining any possible action.

HS)-- U.S. Congressman Frank Lucas will hold a town hall meeting in Enid today 10:00-11:00 a.m. in the Gantz Center on the Northern Oklahoma College Enid campus. Residents are invited to attend and share their thoughts on current events in Washington, D.C., and across Oklahoma. Lucas will discuss recent work in Congress, take questions about issues important to constituents of the 3rd Congressional District and seek input on legislation currently before Congress.

GB)--A groundbreaking ceremony for Renew Energy’s new local remanufacturing facility will be held this morning. The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the site of the new facility, 301 S. 54th, which will remanufacture wind turbine drive trains. Other than transportation, services on the turbines will be performed entirely on-site at the facility. Travis Harkins, COO of Renew, said construction is estimated to take one year to complete.

ME)--City officials have set and announced the municipal election 2023 filing dates. The election will decide who will represent residents in Wards 1, 2, and 5 on the Enid City Council for the next four years, as well as the mayor for all residents of Enid. The term for those elected will begin officially May 1, 2023. The filing period for all offices is from 8:00 a.m. on Monday, December 5, 2022 through 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2022. The application for filing may be obtained from the Garfield County Election Board or the Office of the City Clerk. All candidates must be an elector of the State of Oklahoma; be at least twenty-five (25) years of age; at the time of the election, and for the two years preceding such election, shall have been a resident in good faith of the City of Enid. Candidates for Commissioner shall also be a bona fide resident of the ward he or she seeks to represent at the time of filing for office and election. The general municipal election is February 14, 2023.  If a run-off election is necessary, it will be conducted on April 4, 2023. To see the ward map, go to: Enid.org/WardMap. BS)--The 34th annual Hospice Circle of Love’s Fall Book Sale will be held this month. This year’s sale will be 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday at the north building of Hospice Circle of Love’s Enid offices, 314 S. 3rd. Thousands of books will be categorized by genre and will include mysteries, westerns, history and military, classics, science fiction, religious, children’s and cookbooks, among others. In addition, there will be puzzles, DVDs, CDs and books on tape. Julie Nelson, event organizer, said most of the books available are in good or great condition and are quite a bargain at just $1 for hardbacks and 50 cents for paperbacks. In addition, small Harlequin-type romance novels sell for $5 a bag. Proceeds from the event benefit patients with Hospice Circle of Love, the mission of which is to help terminally ill patients live a higher quality of life at the end of life. Circle of Love is one of the longest standing hospices in Oklahoma, serving Northwest Oklahoma for nearly 40 years.
