FL)--Local school district officials say now that the federal government’s COVID-era free meal program has ended, they expect a significant impact when students return to class next month and have to pay for their own food again. Enid News and Eagle reports the federal waivers initially passed at the onset of the pandemic lapsed last week and public school students nationwide, including in Enid and Northwest Oklahoma, will now be charged for breakfast and lunch once the 2022-2023 school year starts in August. In preparation, Enid area school district officials say they are encouraging qualifying families to apply for the government’s long-running free and reduced-cost meals program. At Enid Public Schools, almost 6,850 students, or roughly 89% of the district, based on May’s enrollment figures qualified for free or reduced-cost meals last school year. Any family with questions or needing more information should contact their local school district.
