SP)--The new school year in Enid began today. District official say parents of Enid Public Schools students will be responsible for deciding whether to quarantine their child at home after possible exposure to COVID-19. Parents of elementary-age EPS children will be notified if a student in their child’s classroom tests positive for the virus, but that won’t happen for students in multiple classes at the three middle schools and Enid High School. Officials said notifications will be sent only if an elementary parent decides to report the positive COVID test result to the school. Only self-reported, positive-case isolation totals will be updated for each school site online. The schools will not be contact tracing, instead Garfield County Health Department will be contact tracing by itself for EPS students and staff this year if a positive test is reported. A districtwide vaccination clinic held Tuesday, for annual sports physicals, tetanus and TDAP shots, also included around 50-75 first-dose COVID shots. Children at least 12 years of age are eligible for the Pfizer vaccine.

CC)—The Enid Mayor and Board of Commissioners Tuesday night approved a new broadband provider to offer services in Enid. Commissioners approved a new, non-exclusive franchise deal with Bluepeak to construct and maintain a fiber-optic cable system throughout Enid, replacing a lapsed deal with Suddenlink. Officials said within three years, Bluepeak will be able to provide both internet and cable TV to Enid residents with its “Fiber to the Home” plan that company representatives on Tuesday called a “true game-changer.” The city of Enid will then receive 5% of gross revenues from cable services each fiscal year quarter for at least 10 years. Bluepeak has two years to meet 50% completion and three years for 90%, according to the 10-year franchise agreement, passed unanimously Tuesday with an additional 7-0 emergency vote to facilitate faster build-out. Bluepeak also will set up a retail office in Enid with technicians to install private services.

Earlier this summer Dobson Fiber announced it also will build 350 miles of fiber for internet in Oklahoma and Arkansas, starting in Enid. Company representatives held a local groundbreaking ceremony August 5th.  Dobson does not yet have a completion date for the project. The Study Session will be at 5:00 with the Regular Meeting at 6:30. Both meetings will be held in Council Chambers of the City Administration Building at 401 West Garriott and are open to the public. DS)--Enid Police Department will participate in a national highway safety campaign aimed at educating people about the dangers and consequences of driving drunk through Labor Day. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign will run from Aug. 18 through Sept. 6. EPD. Lt. Eric Holtzclaw said the goal with participating in the campaign is to save lives. Holtzclaw, who has been investigating impaired drivers for 24 years, said in the release that “it’s clear that the problem is not going away.” “With the proliferation of medical marijuana and the increased usage of prescription medications by the whole population, there is a false sense that it’s OK to consume these products and drive,” Holtzclaw said. “This is not the case as these medications have much more impairment components that make it even more dangerous to drive after consuming them.” Beginning Aug. 18, EPD officers will be conducting enhanced enforcements and looking for impaired drivers.
