KG)--An Enid man was sentenced Thursday to life imprisonment, with all but 35 years suspended, for his role in the 2019 death of 41-year-old Diana Baez. Baez was stabbed and beaten at her home on West Pine on Sept. 11, 2019, and died three days later at OU Medical Center. Enid News and Eagle reports 28 year-old Luis Octavio Macias pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony on Thursday, receiving a life sentence with all but 35 years suspended for the former and 20 years for the latter. Macias’ sentences will run concurrently along with an April 2019 second-degree rape charge he pleaded guilty to in May, for which he received 10 years. He also will receive credit for time he already has served. Macias is the fourth of five people, and second this week, who have pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder and conspiracy charges. The fifth suspect, Michael Huerta, will have his next court date on Sept. 7.

CD)--Data released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday showed growth and loss for counties in Northwest Oklahoma. Garfield County saw an increase of 2,266 people, or 3.7%, since 2010. The county’s population stands at 62,846, according to the census from numbers on April 1, 2020, up 2.226 (3.7%) in 2010. Enid also grew from 49,379 in 2010 to 51,308 in 2020. Major County saw the second-largest increase in Northwest Oklahoma, up 3.4% from 2010 to 2020 with an increase of 255 people. Woodward County saw an increase of 389 people, a 1.9% change. Kingfisher County’s population increased 1% in the past 10 years, an increase of 150 people. Alfalfa County also increased 1% in population gaining 57 people. The biggest decline in Northwest Oklahoma was in Blaine County, which lost more than a quarter of its population since 2010, down 3,208 from 2010. Grant County lost 7.9% of its population since the 2010 census, down 358 people.

FP)--United Way of NW Oklahoma recently received a $25,000 ADM Cares grant to fight hunger and provide food and nutritional information to eight food resource centers in Northwest Oklahoma. “United Way of Northwest Oklahoma is very grateful to ADM for this very generous grant. The funds will go to support food resource centers and food pantries in eight counties and to help feed and educate thousands of individuals and families about nutrition and address food insecurity,” says Dan Schiedel, CEO of the United Way of NW OK. “We are excited to help people in northwest Oklahoma,” said Scott Keller, General Manager, ADM Enid. Through this grant and our partnership with United Way of Northwest Oklahoma, we will help feed and educate more than 100,000 people. RW)--The intersection of Van Buren and West York and the nearby southbound, most western lane of Van Buren will be closed to traffic beginning Monday. This closure is expected to last about two weeks and will allow contractors to complete concrete repairs on a drainage flume.

DS)--Enid Police Department will participate in a national highway safety campaign aimed at educating people about the dangers and consequences of driving drunk through Labor Day. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign will run from Aug. 18 through Sept. 6. EPD. Lt. Eric Holtzclaw said the goal with participating in the campaign is to save lives. Holtzclaw, who has been investigating impaired drivers for 24 years, said in the release that “it’s clear that the problem is not going away.” “With the proliferation of medical marijuana and the increased usage of prescription medications by the whole population, there is a false sense that it’s OK to consume these products and drive,” Holtzclaw said. “This is not the case as these medications have much more impairment components that make it even more dangerous to drive after consuming them.” Beginning Aug. 18, EPD officers will be conducting enhanced enforcements and looking for impaired drivers.

CN)— Eighteen more newly confirmed virus-related deaths and 2,814 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the state since Thursday, according to daily numbers released late this morning by the Oklahoma State Department of Health. Currently, 19,352 Oklahomans are considered active cases in the state, with 1,326 people currently hospitalized in Oklahoma for treatment of the virus. The seven-day rolling average for new cases reported was 2,122.

There have been 8176 positive COVID-19 cases, and 140 deaths in Garfield County. 7221 of those cases and 129 deaths have been in Enid. In surrounding counties: Kingfisher County has reported 2170 cases, Alfalfa 1178, Blaine County is at 1111 cases, Major 999, and Grant 586.

OH)--Enid Public Schools students and their families are invited to kick off the school year Monday at open house events, or “Meet the Teacher”, across the district. The open house schedule includes middle school and high school sites from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. and elementary sites all day by appointment only. Students and their families will be given the opportunity to meet their teachers, talk with their principals and tour the buildings. Parents can sign-up to volunteer, and they will receive valuable information about the upcoming school year. Parents will also be able to set up their PowerSchool Parent Portal with the assistance of staff. Masks are optional but encouraged by the district. EPS classes begin Wednesday, August 18. DD)--Have the “Dog Days of Summer” made you feel a little ruff? Join the City of Enid Parks and Recreation department at Champlin Pool this weekend for their annual Doggie Dip. This popular event takes place from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, and allows dogs to enjoy the hot August sun and make a splash. All dogs are welcome. The Fast and Furriest, previously planned for that morning, has been cancelled due to low registrations for the 5K and 1-mile fun run. WO)--City of Enid Utility Maintenance department officials say that the water will be off in the Hunter’s Hill Additions on Wednesday, August 18th from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to allow contractors to connect the new water main on North Cleveland, to the additions. Motorists are encouraged to follow posted traffic control signs and to drive with extreme caution in the work area.
